5 Unusual Kids' Party Ideas in Edinburgh (Ages 8+)

September 2026

Organising a fun & original children's party can be tough...

You want an activity that's wholesome, genuinely fun and something all the kids will be engaged and involved in throughout. You don't want to spend three weekends organising, and you'd rather not have to remortgage the house in the process!

At a certain age (around 8+) the soft play stops working; they're too old for bouncy castles and balloon animals, and tired of laser quests and bowling trips. You need a genuine crowd-pleaser with just a little jeopardy and excitement - something they'll be re-living in the playground on Monday!

Thankfully, Edinburgh has no shortage of fun and unusual kids' birthday party activities and we've put together a list of 5 of our favourites that you might not have considered...

1. Accept a Spy Mission at Team Machine

Ages: 8+ | Weatherproof: Completely | Where: Central Edinburgh, EH8 | Cost: ££

Spy Academy hands kids a one-of-a-kind opportunity to test their spy skills and an immersive environment filled with light, sound and spectacle.

Designed for groups of up to 20 children aged 8+, this uniquely energising team challenge will get everyone involved from the moment they step inside. No waiting around for a turn. No kids sitting on the sidelines. Just one shared adventure where the whole group works together to complete an exciting mission.

Inspired by escape rooms but built for larger groups, the experience combines problem-solving, teamwork and plenty of action inside a world of interactive technology, dramatic lighting, sound effects and unexpected surprises!

It's indoors and fully weatherproof and offers convenient Party Room hire, catering and party bags as reasonably priced "add-ons". At least 2 adults are required to supervise the group (at no additional charge).

2. Plan a Surf Party at Lost Shore

Ages: 7+ | Weatherproof: You're getting wet anyway... | Where: Newbridge (25mins drive) | Cost: £££

If you're looking for an activity that's sure to make a splash then look no further. Built in a disused quarry near Ratho and opened in late 2024, Lost Shore is an inland surf lagoon running Wavegarden technology capable of producing up to a thousand waves an hour from gentle ripples to genuine whitecaps!

Surfing is an activity most kids won't have tried before and most beginners make visible progress inside an hour. Beginner lessons run to about ninety minutes with half an hour on land followed by an hour in the water. Wetsuit, boots, gloves, hood and board are all provided. You bring swimwear, a towel and something warm for afterwards.

Every surfer needs to be able to swim 25 metres, which may rule out some kids. And under-16s need an adult with them on site, which means you'll want a couple of parents staying rather than doing the drop-and-run. There's a café, bar and restaurant with a view straight over the lagoon, so the adults get to sit down with a coffee and watch the fun

3. Take a Puzzle Trail around Edinburgh's Old Town

Ages: 8+ | Weatherproof: Brolly provided! | Where: Central Edinburgh, EH8 | Cost: £

Our City Trails are self-guided adventures through Edinburgh's real streets: part story, part scavenger hunt, with tactile escape-room-style puzzles - not just a boring app screen!

The route takes the group through closes, courtyards and hidden corners of the Old Town that most walk past without ever looking up. Along the way they'll learn fascinating real history, but will likely be too immersed in the tale to realise they're being educated!

For a party, it's scalable for groups of virtually all sizes and because it's self-guided, the team sets their own pace: you can stop for chips or take a detour if you wish. The Trail covers about 5km in a circular loop that starts and ends at our venue in Nicolson Square. We suggest bringing at least one adult per 5 kids to help supervise the group and keep the Trail on track.

4. Embark on a Bushcraft Adventure in the woods

Ages: 8+ | Weatherproof: They'll make their own shelter! | Where: Pentland Hills (near Edinburgh) | Cost: ££

For a party idea that's a heap of fun while teaching genuine life skills consider a guided outdoor adventure just outside Edinburgh. Bushcraft parties typically cover fire-lighting, shelter and den building, a bit of tool work, and something cooked over the flames at the end.

The appeal is partly that it's the polar opposite of everything else on this list: no screens, no timer, no scoring, nobody winning. It's the most least weather-proof idea on our list, but one that's genuinely rewarding. What you do need is proper clothing, a full change for every child, and realistic expectations about what a group of ten looks like at the end. They will be filthy - that's the point!

Edinburgh's providers change from season to season and most run from the Pentlands or one of the country parks around the city, so it's worth searching locally and checking current age minimums, prices and group sizes before you commit.

5. Book an Escape Room Party

Ages: 10+ | Weatherproof: Completely | Where: Central Edinburgh | Cost: ££

When pitched at the right difficulty level an escape room can be an absolutely enthralling choice for a kids' birthday party. Getting them off their phones and immersed in another world!

Usually ideal for slightly older kids - they'll love the sense of achievement from solving puzzles and the thrill of working together against the clock. It's an experience they'll be talking about long after the hour ends.

It's worth selecting a venue carefully to be sure the kids will have a brilliant experience. Look for venues with consistently great reviews, most publish age and difficulty guidance on their websites and don't be afraid to email ahead to double check. At Escape The Past, our rooms are recommended for kids ages 10 and up, with our dedicated Gamesmasters on hand throughout to provide as much help as the group requires.

Group sizes are limited by room capacity, so if you've invited fifteen you'll be looking at running two rooms side by side. Be aware that many venues require an adult to be physically present in the room as part of the group.

How to Choose the Perfect Kids Party in Edinburgh

If the birthday child is the sort who wants a story, go for the spy mission or the escape room. If they'd rather be moving, surf or bushcraft. If you've got a wide age range in the group — cousins, younger siblings, a couple of adults — the city trail absorbs that better than anything else here.

And a few things that apply whichever you pick:

  • Book earlier than feels necessary. Saturday slots for anything good in Edinburgh go six to eight weeks out, and school holidays go further.
  • Double check the age minimum and any height or ability requirements. Turning a child away at the door is the worst possible start to a birthday.
  • Consider food & extras. Some of these activities offer catering and party room hire. If they don't, have somewhere identified in advance within a five-minute walk.
  • Confirm the adult-to-child ratio. Some venues require accompanying adults, some prefer you not to hover. It's worth knowing which before you promise the other parents they can go home.

Any of these kids party options are sure to beat the usual bouncing or bowling - follow the tips and plan a one-of-a-kind birthday party they'll remember!
