We’re delighted to announce that The Deacon’s Cabinet has been awarded “Highly Commended – Scotland” in the inaugural UK Escape Room Awards, placing it among the top 4% of escape rooms in the whole of the UK. As one of only a small handful of Scottish companies to be awarded, it's particularly exciting result for us, recognising The Deacon's Cabinet one of the very best escape rooms in the country.
The UK Escape Room Awards are based on the feedback of genuine enthusiasts and we're grateful to everyone who has played, reviewed and recommended the room over the past year or so!
Meet Edinburgh’s original Jekyll & Hyde
The Deacon’s Cabinet is a little different from your average escape room. Set in Edinburgh in 1788, it tells the true story of Deacon William Brodie — respected cabinetmaker and city councillor by day, gambler and audacious thief by night. His story later became the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
It’s this strange piece of Edinburgh history that forms the centrepiece of The Deacon’s Cabinet. Players enter Brodie’s workshop with just one hour to uncover the secrets of his infamous cabinet and his rumoured fortune.
History, storytelling & escape rooms
As with all our escape room experiences, our aim with The Deacon’s Cabinet was to make Edinburgh's history something you could experience, rather than simply read about.
The puzzles, setting and story all work together to transport players back to 18th-century Edinburgh, while the real events surrounding Deacon Brodie provide the inspiration for the mystery. It’s a historical heist with plenty of puzzles, atmosphere and more than a few surprises along the way!
That combination seems to have struck a chord. The room has welcomed thousands of players, from Edinburgh locals to visitors exploring the city, and we’ve loved hearing how many people have discovered Brodie’s story for the first time through the experience.
One of Scotland’s best escape rooms
To now be recognised is a fantastic achievement for our small team and a great inspiration to keep doing more of what we love: finding the darker, stranger stories hidden in Edinburgh’s past and turning them into thrilling, immersive experiences - be that indoor escape rooms, or outdoor city trails.
For now, though, we’ll raise a glass to Deacon Brodie; Edinburgh’s favourite villain, and the unlikely star of one of Scotland’s best escape rooms!
